Hey fans of women's sport,

This week we're covering tennis, F1 Academy, and footy. Our ICYMI section is where you can find snippets of sports news and Podium Places is what we're watching, reading, following ... that kinda thing.

This week's Podium Places (in no particular order, all winners of course)

Reading: Disappointed at how few online newspapers feature women's sport! Not often we get down but it's pretty demoralising. Good job you've got this dropping into your inbox every Tuesday ...!

Last post we liked on socials: We are loving the reels of GB's Emily Campbell's clean and jerks in the European Weightlifting Championships. And the smile on her face....

Listening: We are going to resurrect our Spotify We are Girls in Sport Workout Playlist. It seems to have disappeared from Spotify but if you search for We are Girls in Sport, you will find us on a couple of podcasts!

Tennis - Amelie Brooks

The 2025 Billie Jean King Cup Qualifiers event took place a couple of weeks ago with Team GB competing against Germany and The Netherlands.

The team, captained by Anne Keothavong, consisted of Katie Boulter, Sonay Kartal (making her BJKC debut), Harriet Dart, Olivia Nicholls, and Jodie Burrage and after two days of intense competition, the Brits prevailed and won the group!

A strong day of singles against Germany sealed their first win and an epic defeat in the deciding doubles against The Netherlands on the second day means that Team GB will compete in the 2025 Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Shenzhen, China this September.

Motor racing - Scarlett Archer

This past weekend saw F1 in action at Jeddah’s Corniche Circuit, and it was spectacular.

Under the Saudi Arabian floodlights, Chloe Chambers, representing Campos/Haas, claimed pole position with an impressive lap time of 2:04.320.

In Race 1, the reversed grid gave Ella Lloyd, backed by McLaren, a golden opportunity at the front. She seized the opportunity, securing her first-ever F1 Academy victory.

Race 2 belonged to Doriane Pin. After a disappointing eighth-place finish in Race 1, she bounced back with a commanding performance in the feature race, crossing the finish line first.

The demanding Jeddah Corniche Circuit, with its walls close to the narrow track and demanding 27 corners, tested every driver’s accuracy and courage.

Who’s Been Crushing It in the WSL in the last week?

The Women’s Super League in England has been super exciting lately! Here are the players who’ve stood out:

Arsenal’s All-Stars

Caitlin Foord: Scored 2 awesome goals in a big win over Leicester (5-1). She’s on fire!

Stina Blackstenius: Also found the net in that game—she’s always a threat up front.

Beth Mead & Victoria Pelova: Both got on the scoresheet too, showing Arsenal’s attack is stacked.

Aston Villa’s Heroes

Anna Patten & Ebony Salmon: Scored clutch goals in a wild 3-2 win against Tottenham.

Kirsty Hanson: Bagged the game-winner in that match.

In other news, Manchester City drew against Everton, Manchester United drew 0-0 with West Ham and Liverpool won 2-1 against Brighton and Hove Albion.

Chelsea remain at the top of the WSL and look unstoppable at the moment with a game to play to catch up with the other teams.

Weightlifting - Bella Brown caused an upset when she competed in group B of the snatch at the European Weightlifting Championships and won bronze in the 76kg category. As she said on insta, 'People from group B aren't supposed to win!'

GB's Emily Campbell won her fifth consecutive European Championship title and added her name to the history books! Read more here. A great Great British winning weekend in Moldova.

Marathon / British legends - yep it was tricky to know what to call this section but the long-distance superstar Paula Radcliffe has secured the Six Star Medal, completing all six major marathons around the globe (not around the globe, right, like around the globe).

And don't forget it's the London Marathon this weekend - get up early to watch!

Quote of the week

"From the ages of around 17–21 I suffered with disordered eating and poor body image, and powerlifting was such a powerful tool in my recovery."

Weightlifter Lizzie Mills from our interview with her - read more here.
