Netball
Netball just got a turbo boost!
On March 8, Sheffield was the stage for the inaugural Netball Super Cup—a dazzling curtain-raiser for the Netball Super League, kicking off March 14.
The tournament brought together eight teams, including fresh contenders Nottingham Forest Netball and Birmingham Panthers, showcasing a star-studded lineup of talent like South Africa’s Sigi Burger and World Champion Chelsea Pitman.
The event also introduced the game-changing "Super Shot" rule. Players can now score two points by shooting from a designated zone three metres from the goal, but here's the twist—it’s only active during a nail-biting window at the end of each quarter. Drama, anyone?
London Pulse stole the show, clinching victory over Leeds Rhinos in a 20-15 thriller. Olivia Tchine was unstoppable, racking up 16 points thanks to her mastery of the Super Shot. With Pulse’s triumph setting the tone, all eyes are now on the Super League—let the games begin!
Tennis
Meanwhile, at Indian Wells, California, Emma Raducanu was out first round, while Boulter went out in the third. Raducanu said that she was trying to move on from recent events which is encouraging.
Sonay Kartal was beaten in qualifying like fellow Brit, Jodie Burrage but she entered the main draw as a 'lucky loser.' In the second round she's defeated 16th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia which marked her first win against a top-20 player. We love a PB! Congrats Sonay!
🤰 In other news, the WTA has announced a maternity package for female professional tennis players, supported by PIF (public investment fund). This groundbreaking move provides 12 months of paid leave, helping women play the sport they love and have a family.
Football
In the WSL, Chelsea extended their lead at the top of the table by beating Leicester 3-1. Despite their winning way, manager Bompastor thinks there's room for improvement; speaking to the BBC:
"We could have been more clinical in the box. When we were 2-0 up we cannot concede the goal we conceded. When you are winning 2-0 you need to control more things and we gave the goal to Leicester. We need to control the game in that aspect."
England manager Sarina Wiegman spoke for International Women's Day about UEFA's new strategy, 'Unstoppable ' - it's hard to believe that some of these minimum standards have not been addressed before.
